You heard me right. A festival that revolves around the men’s genital part. Sure, it is a weird and wacky festival, but there’s actually a purpose. There’s a legend around a sharp-toothed demon that hid inside a young woman’s vagina and castrated two men on their wedding night. The women seek help from a blacksmith who crafted an iron phallus to break the demon’s teeth, which is why it became a shrine.
Nowadays, it is a festival that raises money for HIV research, and the shrine is said to offer prosperity that relates to marriage, such as marriage-couple harmony and easy delivery of a baby.
It was my first time that I’ve been outside of Kofu and Kawasaki, which is where the festival was held at, was amazing.
